By Bus Service.
Cumbria is a largely rural area and also includes the whole of the Lake District National Park. Consequently, there are particular demands on bus transport from residents and visitors alike.
Most bus services in Cumbria, especially in urban areas, are provided on a 'commercial' basis. This means that the bus operators costs of running the service are covered by the fares they collect from passengers on the route. The timetable, route and fares on these services are set by the bus operator and the County Council has no direct influence on them.
Stagecoach is one of the largest bus operators in the UK and is playing a leading role in driving passenger growth on public transport across the country.
Stagecoach North West carries over 34 million passengers a year and operates over 26 million miles. With up to 1,300 employees and a fleet size of 550, operating throughout Lancashire and Cumbria. Our Head Office is based in Carlisle.
Stagecoach works closely with local authorities in the North West, including Lancashire County Council, Cumbria County Council and the Greater Manchester Passenger Executive, to operate new services and work together in marketing initiatives.
